The City of Newburgh is located on the western side of the Hudson River in Orange County just 60 miles north of New York City. The City of Newburgh was once a vibrant hub of commercial, industrial, social and cultural activities. Today, Newburgh has all the characteristics of a distressed community: a diminishing industrial base accompanied by a high unemployment rate; substandard housing; a deteriorating infrastructure; pervasive poverty; and a degree of hopelessness among economically disenfranchised segments of the population.

Thus, Newburgh Community Action Committee, Inc has been a mainstay in this community for over 40 years (created in 1967) and as such has a proven record of uniting multiple generations from the very young to seniors in creating positive and lasting change in the community through several successful programs. Our mission is to alleviate poverty through promoting self sufficiency. For example, one of our most popular programs is the Building Analyst/ Envelope Training Program, which is specifically geared toward increasing employability, through advanced green training of the young and those who have “aged” out or are educationally unprepared for traditional jobs. This program has successfully paired the young with more experienced generations in the construction trades while teaching older generations the virtues and future of a green economy. This program has been successful as it also incorporates green technologies into the fundamentals of learning in a community that has often been left out of this potential lucrative industry.

Other programs we operate are GED, Work Readiness and Energy programs to assist renters and homeowners save on ever increasing energy costs. Additionally, we have a very successful Wage Subsidy Program which brings together qualified employees and willing employers to encourage local hire. On an annual basis NCAC provides services to over 1,200 individuals and 600 families with 100% of our participants being 150% below federal poverty guidelines. In conclusion, NCAC remains committed to helping individuals and families change the trajectory of their lives through education, career advancement and positive community involvement while encouraging clarity and understanding between the generations.
